FrugalTec — Vertical growing for greenhouses

Up to 10× more growing area — in the greenhouse you already have.

You pay for cubic meters, but only use square meters. FrugalTec activates the unused volume above your crop — with modular vertical towers retrofitted into your existing greenhouse and powered by natural sunlight.

Your added value

Where we create value.

01Existing facility More yield
Structure, heating, climate control, depreciation — your fixed costs are already running. FrugalTec spreads them over a much larger production volume.
02New crops New markets
Premium lettuces, herbs, strawberries: higher-margin crops — added to your existing facility, not replacing it.
03Automation Built for the future
All work steps in one place — the plants come to the operator. Mechanically prepared for step-by-step automation.

Every operation is different. Together, we identify where the greatest potential lies for you.

The system

The vertical growing system for greenhouses

Most vertical growing concepts require new buildings and rely entirely on artificial lighting and climate control. Our modular system is installed in existing greenhouses or polytunnels and uses natural sunlight as its primary source.

That is the structural difference that makes the economics work.

System architecture

Three building blocks. One integrated system.

Modularity 01

Vertical architecture

Modular towers move in a closed loop within the existing greenhouse structure. Tower height and plant spacing are configured according to crop and available infrastructure. The system scales — from a single module to full-area utilization.

Plant-to-human workflow 02

Central workstation

All operations — planting, inspection, treatment and harvesting — take place at one central station, where the plants come to the operator. Less walking, less effort and more control. Centralisation provides the basis for gradual automation.

Smart farming 03

Monitoring

Sensors continuously monitor water, nutrients, light and plant health. Lighting reacts dynamically — adding only the difference between available sunlight and the plant's needs. The decision system provides concrete recommendations for action.

The smart-farming system is part of the development roadmap and will be introduced step by step.

Economics

Your fixed costs are already running. Use them better.

Your greenhouse already generates fixed costs — for operations, climate, irrigation and infrastructure. These costs occur regardless of how many plants you produce.

By activating unused vertical space, we spread your existing fixed costs over a much larger production volume. The existing infrastructure works for more plants, more yield and a better distribution of your investment.

Your economics depend on your crop, greenhouse and operating processes. That is why we review with each operation where the potential lies and whether an investment makes economic sense.

Resources & costs

Produce efficiently. Conserve resources.

Closed water and nutrient loops and the optimal use of natural sunlight enable resource-efficient production with high area efficiency.

up to
90%
less water
The closed water loop can significantly reduce consumption compared with soil-based cultivation.
up to
60%
less fertilizer
Nutrients are supplied precisely and can be used more efficiently than in conventional soil cultivation.
primary energy source
☀
Natural sunlight
Sunlight remains the primary energy source. Supplemental lighting is added only where available sunlight is insufficient for the crop.
SDG 2 · Zero Hunger
SDG 2 · Zero Hunger
More production on existing area and resource-efficient growing methods support a future-ready food supply.
SDG 6 · Clean Water
SDG 6 · Clean Water
Closed water loops reduce consumption and enable efficient use of water resources.
SDG 12 · Responsible Production
SDG 12 · Responsible Production
Less water, less fertilizer and the use of existing infrastructure contribute to responsible production.
Crops & applications

For lettuces, herbs, berries and more.

The FrugalTec system can be configured for different crops and operating models. Depending on market, existing infrastructure and strategy, different applications become possible.

Lettuces

Lettuces

High area efficiency and short growing cycles make lettuces an attractive crop for vertical growing.

Herbs

Herbs

Basil, parsley, chives and specialty herbs benefit from controlled growing conditions and thrive in vertical systems.

Specialty crops

The modular system can be adapted for additional crops and future applications.

About FrugalTec

Developed in Switzerland. Built for producers.

FrugalTec was founded in Eastern Switzerland in 2022 to make the unused vertical dimension of existing greenhouses productive. Behind FrugalTec are three founders with many years of experience in product development, plastics engineering, electronics, software, industrialization and sales.

Today, together with producers, research partners and funding institutions, we are developing the next generation of professional greenhouse cultivation.
